The rules for roadworthiness testing in Flanders have changed. Here's what you need to know, whether you live in Merchtem, Opwijk, Asse, Londerzeel or Meise.
A passenger car goes for its first test when it is 4 years old, counted from first registration. For tests from 1 September 2026 a 2 year interval then applies, regardless of age or mileage. Your current test certificate is not automatically extended: the expiry date on it remains valid until your next test.
For vans and light trucks the switch to a two-yearly test is gradual: from 1 September 2026 for vehicles up to 4 years old, from 1 September 2027 up to 8 years and from 1 September 2028 for older vehicles.
You can go for the test up to 2 months before the expiry date without losing that date. If you're late, you pay a surcharge. Under the new rules, if there's a major defect you have 2 months to have it repaired and present your car again.
Fitting a tow bar no longer requires a separate test. The mandatory used car test when selling within Belgium will be abolished from 1 January 2027. Until then it remains required. Read more at sell your car.

Ik ben bij Garage XCS in Merchtem geweest en ik ben enorm tevreden over mijn ervaring. Vanaf het moment dat ik binnenkwam, werd ik vriendelijk en professioneel ontvangen. Het hele team nam de tijd om naar mijn verhaal te luisteren en alles duidelijk uit te leggen. Je merkt meteen dat klantvriendelijkheid hier echt belangrijk is. Ze werken eerlijk, zorgvuldig en met veel kennis van zaken.
Mijn ervaring bij een vorige garage was helaas helemaal anders. Daar voelde ik me niet welkom en had ik het gevoel dat ik niet met respect werd behandeld. Ik ben heel blij dat ik deze garage heb gevonden en ik zal vanaf nu zeker terugkomen voor onderhoud en herstellingen. Voor onderhoud ga ik zelf altijd naar Audi, maar deze keer had mijn RS3 nieuwe remblokken nodig. De offerte van Audi vond ik zelf sterk overdreven voor enkel remblokken. Via vrienden heb ik XCS leren kennen en ben ik daar eens binnengesprongen. Ik vertelde dat de offerte bij Audi aan de zeer hoge kant was, maar dat ik zeker ook niet voor de goedkoopste optie wilde gaan. Duur is niet altijd beter, maar goedkoop kan ook duurkoop zijn.
Bij XCS hebben ze duidelijk verstand van auto’s en wisten ze dat het vermogen van mijn auto ook degelijke remmen nodig heeft. In overleg zijn we samen uitgekomen op remblokken die dicht aansluiten bij de OEM-remmen van Audi, maar aan een veel schappelijkere prijs.
Qua prijs-kwaliteit zit je hier zeker goed!

Ik ga hier nu al +- 3 jaar altijd tot in de puntjes afgewerkt en vlotte communicatie deze manne weten waar ze mee bezig zijn. Ik heb hier een hele zaero kit laten plaatsen door hun en elk onderhoud laten doen dat nodig was.
