Air conditioning in autumn: why servicing matters now

Summer is over, but your air conditioning shouldn't hibernate. On the contrary: autumn is exactly when you notice the difference. Wet roads, cooler mornings and damp air cause misted windows more quickly. Air conditioning that works well dries the air in the cabin and helps you set off safely without waiting for the windows to clear.
At XCS Automotive in Merchtem, Quinten and Jorne see that many drivers mainly associate air conditioning with warm days. Yet regular use and timely servicing are important all year round for comfort, safety and the lifespan of the system.
Why air conditioning servicing in autumn is smart
An air conditioning system loses a small part of its refrigerant every year through pipes and seals, even without an obvious defect. After a few seasons the air conditioning cools or dries less well, the compressor has to work harder and you risk more expensive damage. Garages in Belgium and the Netherlands often advise a service every two to three years, with a leak check and recharge where needed.
Typical signs it's time for a check:
- the air conditioning cools less or not at all;
- windows stay misted for longer in the morning or when it rains;
- a musty smell when switching on the ventilation;
- a hissing or rattling noise when the compressor kicks in;
- the last service was more than two to three years ago.
R134a and R1234yf: which refrigerant does your car use?
Not every car uses the same refrigerant gas. Older vehicles often run on R134a; newer models (roughly from 2017 onwards) usually use the more environmentally friendly R1234yf. These gases are not interchangeable: the system, connections and service equipment are matched to them. The refrigerant your car needs is usually shown on a sticker in the engine bay.
At XCS Automotive we recharge and repair air conditioning for R134a and R1234yf. We first check which system is fitted, test for leaks and work with the right equipment. Topping up gas in a leaking circuit is money down the drain; a correct diagnosis prevents that.
Tips you can apply yourself
Run the air conditioning regularly in the colder months too, for example about ten minutes a week. This keeps the compressor lubricated and the circuit moving. Ideally switch the air conditioning off a few minutes before turning off the engine. And don't forget the cabin filter: a dirty filter reduces air quality and dehumidification.
