Minor or major service: what is the difference?

Minor service, major service, interim service, Service A or B: the names differ by garage and by make. What do they actually include, and how do you know when your car is due? In this article, XCS Automotive in Merchtem explains the difference, so you know what to expect and why it matters.
Why regular maintenance?
A well maintained car is safer, more reliable and holds its value better. Over time, oil loses its lubricating properties, filters clog up and wearing parts such as brakes and tyres deteriorate. Putting off maintenance risks breakdowns and more expensive repairs later on. A complete service history is also a strong argument when you sell your car. A buyer can see straight away that the car has been looked after.
What is a minor service?
A minor service is the basic service. At XCS Automotive it includes, among other things:
- Changing the engine oil and replacing the oil filter
- Measuring the brakes and tyre tread
- Checking the lights
- Checking and topping up fluids such as coolant, brake fluid and screenwash
- Checking the battery
A minor service is often needed every year or after a certain mileage, depending on your car and how you drive.
What is a major service?
A major service follows the manufacturer's schedule and includes everything in the minor service plus the additional replacements prescribed at that point. For example:
- The air filter and cabin filter
- The fuel filter, on many diesel cars
- The spark plugs, on petrol engines
- The brake fluid
- A thorough check of the underbody, suspension, exhaust and wearing parts
Exactly what is included differs by make, model and engine. Some services also include the timing belt or the automatic gearbox oil. That is why we always follow your manufacturer's schedule.
How do you know when your car is due?
The on-board computer
Most recent cars tell you themselves when a service is due, with a message or a spanner symbol on the dashboard. Some systems take your driving style into account to work out the right moment.
The service booklet
For older cars, or if in doubt, the schedule is in the service booklet or the manufacturer's documentation: after a certain mileage or time, whichever comes first.
Your driving habits
Do you mostly make short trips, often tow a trailer or drive in town? Then your car has a harder life and it may be worth having it serviced sooner.
What you can check yourself in between
Between two services you can keep an eye on quite a lot yourself. It takes little time and you spot problems sooner.
- Tyre pressure: check it about once a month and before a long journey, using the values on the sticker in the door pillar or fuel flap.
- Oil level: check it now and then with a cold engine on level ground.
- Screenwash: top up in good time, with antifreeze in winter.
- Lights: walk round the car with the lights on every so often.
- Wipers: if they leave streaks, replace the wiper blades.
If you notice something unusual, such as a smell, a noise or a warning light, do not wait until the next service.
And with a Mercedes-Benz?
Mercedes-Benz uses Service A and Service B, which alternate. Service A is the smaller service, Service B the more extensive one. Your dashboard shows which service is needed. Read all about it in our article Service A and Service B explained.

Your manufacturer's warranty

Combine smartly
Plan your service together with other things on the agenda. Before winter, for example, you can also have your tyres changed and the battery tested; you will find more tips in our winter checklist. Is your car due for its technical inspection soon? Then combine the service with a pre-inspection check.
